US Youth Soccer

We are a community recreational-level youth soccer club for youth ages 4 to 16 which plays games with other community clubs during fall and spring sessions. Volunteers manage every aspect of our 501c3 non-profit organization. Our club is a member of both Seattle Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) and Washington Youth Soccer Association (WYSA). All BHYS soccer activities are suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions; for more information, see below. (Updated December 12, 2020)

We continue to observe Covid restrictions.  We anticipate returning to full operations for Spring Soccer which starts mid-April.  Expect registration instructions to be posted here in February 2021.

BHYS players, families and coaches mourn the loss of Coach Mike Carney who died December 7, 2020. We are accepting donations to the Mike Carney Soccer Fund which will be used to support his mission to promote good citizenship by providing underprivileged kids with essential life skills through soccer. Please send your check to the address below with your name and address so we can acknowledge your tax deductible donation.

Mike Carney succumbed to a heart attack as he jogged around Maple Wood Playfield soccer pitch near his home on Beacon Hill.  It was the same field where he coached many teams over the past 45 years. He was an extraordinary coach, less interested in winning and more interested in the development of underprivileged players from local schools.  When he died, he was coach of the Rage, boys from Seattle’s Aki Kurose Middle School where most of the kids live in poverty and many are first generation immigrants from all over the world.  Like all Carney teams, the Rage had 4 or more different languages spoken on the side lines.

On the Saturday following his death, Rage players called themselves together for a memorial circle on the field next to their school.  If Mike could have been there, he would have told them he is deeply touched by this impromptu gesture of love and appreciation from the kids he loved. Then he would tell them all to go home because the COVID-19 virus makes this gathering too dangerous for them and their families.

For 45 years of coaching, Mike wanted his players to learn essential life skills through soccer. That was his mission in life. Mike promoted critical thinking and good citizenship. He taught them: respect the authority of the referee, respect your opponent and love your team mates. He encouraged them: work together and you will succeed. Mike had a pragmatic approach to everything he did in life. After all, he was a professional engineer when not coaching.

Team Rage will go on with their next season. Beacon Hill Youth Soccer will make sure they get full support. The Mike Carney Soccer Fund was established to support Mike’s mission to promote good citizenship by providing underprivileged kids with essential life skills through soccer.

BHYS is committed to providing affordable soccer to all in our wonderful diverse community. Forty percent (40%) of our families need scholarship support. Here are ways BHYS finds support for affordable soccer:

Individual donations from parents and coaches during registration
Individual donations from friends of BHYS
Corporate volunteer match programs
City of Seattle grants
Business sponsorships
Community civic organization gifts
SYSA Community Outreach Fund
Gifts from other SYSA clubs

BHYS designed a soccer scarf with our diversity shield for coaches to wear on game day and to give to friends who support our mission. Scarves will be for sale for $20 when BHYS teams return to Jefferson Park with proceeds providing scholarships for our players who qualify for free/reduced school meals.

All BHYS activities are managed by volunteers. Working with BHYS youth and families is very rewarding! Please send a message to Larry McCann at if you are interested in volunteering. We need:

Coaches and assistant coaches (August through October or November)
Web Developer to upgrade this website (Winter or Spring 2021)
Registrar to manage fall 2021 registration (May through September)
Volunteer Coordinator to recruit volunteers for a variety of projects (January through November)

MOD League Game Rules (U6 to U9 - ages 4 to 8)

Recreational League Game Rules (U10 to U19 - ages 9 to 18)

BHYS value every player as a person who deserves to be treated with dignity & respect. We teach our players that we care about them as a person, and their self-worth is not connected to their abilities as an athlete. We urge our families and volunteers to support this belief and make soccer fun for all. Watch and study videos provided by The Positive Coaching Alliance.

Last summer, after gathering comments from parents and coaches, the BHYS Board decided that gathering even small groups for practices increases the risk of transmitting COVID-19 infection to our players, coaches, and family members. We hope to resume Beacon Hill soccer practices and games in April 2021 if we can provide a program that is reasonably safe for our families at that time.
